Between PS4 and Xbox One, there are so many great Zombie games to play. It was difficult to rank the 15 best because so many of these games are different from each other. Some are great single player experiences, while others are online multiplayer only. Some are serious, scary, or dark, while others are colorful, humorous, or corny. This list is ranked based on games that provide the best Zombie experiences, along with fun factor and quality. I have also included honorable mentions and anticipated Zombie games coming soon lists in this article.
15. The Escapists: The Walking Dead
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
It’s The escapists game based on The Walking Dead. Play as the main character from The Walking Dead TV show Rick Grimes. You are in charge of a group of survivors that depend on your leadership. Complete objectives, protect your group against walkers, and complete daily tasks in your free time. It’s a time management game that revolves around surviving and moving on to new areas. There is plenty of creative crafting for new weapons and items and zombie fighting along the way. This was fun to play in short bursts. I can see some players becoming bored with the gameplay after a while or disliking the retro 8-bit graphics. Overall it does feel enough like The Walking Dead and the zombie influence is strong enough to barely make it on our top list.

14. Outlast Trinity
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
I was hesitate to add Outlast Trinity to this list because it’s debatable to weather or not the crazy enemies lurking around are Zombie enough, even though I think they are! The game deals with a evil cult like religion along with science experiments on people. The Trinity edition includes Outlast 1, Outlast Whistleblower and Outlast 2. In all the games you will have to investigate the mysteries of this cult, while being trapped in areas and running from spooky Zombie like enemies. Not armed with any weapons you can only hide, run from them and hope to make to the next area. If this list was based on the scariest games on Xbox One or PS4, Outlast would be among the top for sure. Not everyone will label the enemies as Zombies in Outlast, some people might say they are monsters! Either way, it’s a great game with tons of scares.

13. Sunset Overdrive (Xbox One Exclusive)
See It On Amazon: Xbox One |
Almost the entire population of Sunset City has been infected by FIZZCO’s energy drink, turning the population into OD (A type of Zombie or monster). You will have to liberate the city and destroy this horde. Everything is colorful, smooth and not so serious in Sunset Overdrive. The characters are fun to listen to and the story is humorous and silly at times but it’s always pretty cool. The gameplay is amazingly fun using all sorts of awesome weapons against the OD, Robots and soldiers, while sliding, jumping and grinding around the city. Collecting and earning power ups is a fun part of the cities exploration. The missions may seem repetitive at certain points but the game always throws more variety in, as the game goes on. The OD (Zombies) are a huge part of the experience here, and this game is like no other. If your seeking a Zombie or monster themed game with a mix of Tony Hawk Pro Skater and Ratchet and Clank, Sunset Overdrive is a must check out.

12. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
Resident Evil 7 is probably the scariest Resident Evil game in the series. It holds a nice mix of elements from Outlast and Resident Evil 1. You will have to hide in certain areas, attack and solve simple puzzles. The theme looks like something out of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre movie. It’s not exactly a full on Zombie game, because the main enemies you will encounter (like the Baker family) are more like deranged human monsters. However, there are generic enemies throughout the game called “Molded” that fit the brain dead zombie persona well. I wish there was more Zombie types here, but the games main focus is on survival Horror through the Bakers families mansion, and less about Zombies compared to other Resident Evil games. Zombies a plenty or not, Resident Evil 7 is still a must have game if you are into the horror scene of gaming.

11. Dead Nation (PS4 Exclusive)
See It On Amazon: PS4 |
Dead nation is a good top down arcade style shooter that takes place during a zombie apocalypse. Choose from two different characters Jack McReady or Scarlett Blake. You are on a mission to possibly reverse the effects of the Zombie Outbreak, but surviving is your number one goal. You are not a super human running around, you will have to use strategy to survive. Collecting money for upgrades and buying new weapons is a must to become stronger, in order to survive the hordes. It’s fun playing alone, but it’s even funner playing couch Co-Op with a friend. If you are looking for a challenge and tons of fast paced action Dead Nation is a great choice.

10. Deadlight
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
The world has ended and only survivors and zombies are left on earth. Play as Randall Wayne a survivor on a quest to find his family through the ruins of Seattle Washington. Zombie Hordes are of abundance in this land, run, fight, solve mini puzzles and do whatever it takes to survive. The dark 2D theme is visually striking giving off a The Last Of Us vibe in certain areas. The game does a great job mixing up the atmosphere with Zombies making you think what you need to do to pass the next area. It has a great flow to it, with some trial and error, but if you are looking for a great survive and run experience this one is fantastic.

9. Telltale’s The Walking Dead
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
So far there is 3 seasons of Telltale games The Walking Dead video games, with the final season coming in 2018. These games might not be for everyone because they are story driven and focus mainly on the characters. The action is a mix of quicktime events and making choices that may later change the adventure you are riding on. These games are more inlined with The Walking Dead comic books, than the TV show. If you follow the Comics you will find many similarities here. If you are a hardcore Walking Dead fan or are looking for a zombie game more focused on story and less on blood and fast action, you won’t be disappointed in Telltales The Walking Dead games.

8. Zombie Army Trilogy
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
Hitler has unleashed hordes of zombies, with one final attack to take over Europe. Choose from over 25 different characters to play as in this action packed Multiplayer third person shooter. The horde mode is insane and pretty fun especially if you are playing with friends online with voice chat on. There is nothing really in depth and deep about this zombie experience. Its just full of action, blood, brutal weapons and hundreds of Zombies. If you are craving something to play online this is a great choice. Might become boring after a while but I am sure you will come back to it again and again if you enjoy playing online.

8. Dead Island Definitive Collection
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
This Definitive Collection includes both Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide. You are trapped on a island that has been invaded by zombies. Complete missions and side quests to advance in the game. It is open world so if you want to take a break from doing missions you can always just explore collecting items or have some fun killing zombies. The story and character graphics are cringey sometimes lol, but the missions and gameplay keep this game solid enough for the most part. I found some of the cinematic scenes between missions to be hilarious. Sometimes I can’t tell if the creators of Dead Island were trying to make certain scenes funny or serious! The gore physics are great and the graphics have been greatly improved over the old PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. Overall Dead Island is a great single player open world first person action experience, that might become boring after a while for some.

7. Dead Rising 3 (Xbox One Exclusive)
See It On Amazon: Xbox One |
Dead Rising 3 takes place 10 years after the zombie events of Fortune City in Dead Rising 2. Play as a Mechanic named Nick Ramos. Nick is on a mission to make it out of the city of Los Perdidos, California before the military strike comes in to wipe out all the zombies and everyone else left there. Nick will encounter helpful and unhelpful survivors on his way through this mess. Dead Rising 3 has a more serious tone compared to other games in the series, but it’s still loaded with tons of crazy goofy weapons and hats. The game is open, but there is always a linear objective ahead. Killing hordes of zombies is encouraged here, as kill counter is labeled in the corner of the screen! It’s not the best looking 3D Zombie game, running at 720p, but it makes up for it with a volume of Zombies on screen. If you own a Xbox One this is a must have Zombie game!

6. Killing Floor 2
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
Killing Floor 2 is the best online multiplayer Zombie game so far on Xbox One and PS4. There isn’t much story here. Just pick your character, join a 4 player Co-Op quick match and battle against waves of Zombies. After each round you survive, you will be rewarded some money depending on how many Zombies you killed. At the end of each round, Use the money to buy new and better weapons, armor and ammo. The final round always yields a boss. The boss fights are very challenging, you and your online team mates will have to fight hard in order to take him down. There is progression here in the way of Perks earned by using certain weapons. When you level up enough you might want to move onto hard mode online. I also loved the character costumes, background guitar music rifts and the random in and out slow motion gameplay. A must play if you are looking for a fast paced online Co-Op zombie shooter.

4. Dead Rising 4
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
Frank West is the original character from Dead Rising 1 and he is back in Dead Rising 4. This game has a nice Christmas holiday theme to it. It feels more like Dead Rising 1 but with better graphics, a more open world, better weapons and more insanity. Dead Rising 4 has the best characters and story in the series, but sometimes it feels a bit too serious compared to the corny atmosphere. This game is packed with content, the costumes and weapons variety is insane. The missions are fun, and the game moves at a fantastic pace. The game has some glitches and performance issues so be warned. If you can look past that, this is one of the best and funnest Zombie games to play if you are looking for none stop action and not so serious gameplay.

3. State of Decay (Xbox One Exclusive)
See It On Amazon: Xbox One |
State Of Decay is an amazing open world Zombie survival game with heavy RPG elements. Not only will you have to fight against and protect your group against zombies, but you will have to manage resources, relationships, group member injuries and more. Its all easy to manage though because the menus work perfectly using the Xbox One controller. The graphics and bugs is probably the worst part about State Of Decay. It’s not that bad looking, but it does look like a high res Xbox 360 game. On the other hand, the campaign, story, characters and gameplay are all impressive. There’s no game like State Of Decay, that captures the post zombie apocalypse theme from all angles so well, a must play if you own a Xbox One.

2. Dying Light
See It On Amazon: PS4, Xbox One |
Dying Light is an amazing open world playground that takes place in post apocalyptic Zombie setting. The parkour elements add even more freedom and fun to the gameplay. Getting used to the controls and realizing how tough groups of zombies can be overwhelming at first. After playing for a while and upgrading yours skills and weapons, the game becomes much funner and most zombies become easier to deal with. The characters and story are a bit exaggerated but are still interesting. The main mission and side quests are fun and varied for the most part, usually involving zombies, fetch quests and villains. Exploration and killing zombies is a nice distraction if you want to take a break from the missions. At over about 35 hours of gameplay, Dying light is one of the best Zombie games you can buy for consoles. If you are interested in buying this game, I highly recommend buying the version that includes “The Following” DLC expansion also. This expansion adds another campaign along with the ability to drive vehicles, it’s really awesome.

1. The Last Of Us Remastered (PS4 Exclusive)
See It On Amazon: PS4 |
Even though this masterpiece was originally released on PS3 back in 2013, I still believe the PS4 remastered version is the best serious tone Zombie game you can play currently. The hordes of infected enemies are not called zombies in The Last Of Us, instead, they are call “The Infected”. The infected are still brain dead and look similar to zombies with the addition of odd mold like spores stuck to them. If you get bit or scratched by them you will become infected also. The Infected follow all basic zombie principles, but have a slightly different skin (Overall they are zombies). The main characters Joel and Ellie fit into the survival theme perfectly. Going through there ups and downs involving the infected and enemy humans is a wild ride. The story will probably keep you involved the entire way through, wanting to know what will happen next. The gameplay can be stealthy or out right duck and cover action, depending on how you want to play. Crafting weapons and health items is a must to survive. The Last Of Us screams quality in every area, I think every PS4 or PS3 owner should play this game!

* Honorable Mentions *
The following games either barley missed our top list, have been ported many times before, or are loosely zombie themed.
Left 4 Dead 2 (Xbox 360 Game, Backwards Compatible on Xbox One) – The best Co-Op multiplayer Zombie first person shooter on the Xbox 360. This game is still fun to play today. Go through levels playing with 3 others online. Work as a team and Battle against hordes of aggressive zombies while playing through an amazing multiplayer campaign.
Other Resident Evil Games – There are plenty of remastered ports of classic Resident Evil games available for the PS4 and Xbox One that have tons of Zombies in them. My personal favorites are RE: Code Veronica X, RE 4, RE, and RE 6 (Yes I liked Resident Evil 6 also and all the fast action).
Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 – The Zombies are so goofy in PVZ: GW2, it’s hard to call this a zombie game. This is a great online Multiplayer third person shooter though. This might be a better option for young children, then other violent online games like Killing Floor 2 or Zombie Army Trilogy.
Dead Rising 1, 2, and Off The Record – The classic Dead Rising games are also great, and have been ported to Xbox One and PS4.
The Evil Within 1 & 2 – Not really zombies, but evil beings that look like zombies. Pretty good survival horror games!
How to Survive 2 – A pretty good top down zombie game with plenty of action and strategy. Building a community is fun and protecting it against zombies is even funner. The missions became a little too boring and grindy after a while.
Zombi – A lot of people loved Zombi, not sure why though? lol. I personally hated it. I thought everything moved too slow and it was boring. Don’t let my opinion distract you though, probably one of those games you should try for yourself and see if you like it.
Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies & Chronicles – COD: BO3 has a fantastic Zombie multiplayer mode, where you and your team try to survive fighting through waves of Zombies. It’s pretty fun, especially if you like the Call Of Duty shooting gameplay style.
7 Days To Die – On PC it’s a pretty good team based online multiplayer shooter. Too bad PS4 and Xbox One received terrible ports. The game is glitchy and does not run too well. Even with its problems on consoles, it might still be enjoyable for some players.
